Our big day is approaching--what are your plans?

Hi everyone! The Team Florida Virtual School Race for the Cure Team has grown to enormous proportions. As of 9/19, we have 99 registered members! A lot of you have been wondering what our team members are doing before and after the race. I created this space to allow you to share postings--which hotel you're in, which parks you're visiting before or after the race, etc. Please use it to create a posting so that friends and co-workers can meet up with you!

Anonymous said...: Hi everyone! Team Captain Robin Politowicz will be staying at the Doubletree Hotel in Downtown Disney. I'll be there by mid-afternoon, and will be eating dinner at 6 pm at the Italian pavilion in Epcot, if anyone wants to meet up. I'll be staying in the park through the fireworks at 9 p.m. I will be emailing my cell phone # to all FLVS staff participants through Lotus Notes, so if you have any last-minute questions, you can call. Kudos for FLVS from the Komen Foundation!

The Central Florida Affiliate's 2008 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure was held on October 5, 2008 at Disney's Wide World of Sports. Robin Politowicz contacted us several months before the event interested in finding out more information. Robin put us in contact with Florida Virtual School's marketing department and we were thrilled to receive a $1,000 sponsor from FLVS!
Then, Robin formed a FLVS Team and became the Team Captain. The team was a HUGE success with 102 members and they even won the award for the Largest Community Team! The team's fundraising goal for donations was $7,500 and they surpassed that by raising $10,354! The FLVS Team was instrumental in the 2008 success of the race - which was our biggest race (to date). Last year, we had over 6,800 participants and raised over $615,000. Due to the success of our race, we were able to grant $462,000 in our local nine county service area to fund breast cancer education, screening and treatment. We also granted approximately $165,000 to fund breast cancer research.

A word from FLVS CEO Julie Young about the Race for the Cure effort

Board Update

Hi everyone,
Thanks to all of you who participated in the 2008 Race for the Cure! When the alarm went off at 5:30 on Sunday morning, I had to drag myself out of that warm bed to head to the field. I am so glad I got up!!! FLVS had a huge presence at the race, through faculty, family and friends who walked and ran and through the efforts of our PAL team and volunteers who manned the FLVS booth. When we began walking there were thousands of FLVS backpacks on backs everywhere. It was so cool!

FLVS won the award for largest community-based team (they have two categories: corporate and community). We had 102 registered participants and several more who signed up after team registration closed. The FLVS team raised a total of $9,844.00 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. About half of that was attributable to the efforts of Lisa Fraine, who won the award for top-fundraiser. Lisa's mom is battling breast cancer as we speak and several of us had the pleasure of meeting her and Lisa's dad at the event. All told, the race raised more than $300,000 for the fight against breast cancer. It was definitely one of those moments in life that reshapes your heart.

A very huge and special thanks to Robin Politowicz for being our team leader and organizer. She was like a dog with a bone. She told the race organizer that we have a greater challenge than other organization, with no water cooler to gather around or staff lounge where we can post flyers and nag people into participating. We showed them!!!!!
